Naval Periods
As a former naval officer (a long long time ago now), and a keen naval historian, it was inevitable that I would dip my toe in the water. I've tried most naval periods over the years, but I found I wasn't gaming them very much - at least compared to land games. Therefore I've slimmed them down to four periods, each of which has its own particular charm. These only come out about once a quarter, and we usually use them as "filler games", when nobody has anything planned, or we need to substitute a game at short notice. However, we always enjoy ourselves, and a bit of fresh sea air usually does us the world of good...
Of these four periods two are essentially part of the "ironclad era", and the other two are WW2. However, an ACW Naval game is a very different game from a Pre-Dreadnought one, which is really about fleet actions. Similarly, while my Royal Navy fights it out in the Mediterranean with its Italian counterparts in large actions, our Coastal Forces games are scrappy, hard-fought affairs, where one side either wins, or loses very badly indeed!
These sections also contain pictures of our sea mat, a great-looking and vital part of any naval game. At the risk of sounding like a marketing type I have to say I looked for convincing sea terrain for years, until I came across www.terrainmat.com . The product speaks for itself.
