My Williamite Dutch Army in Flanders

c.1693

This army started off as a largely Anglo-Scottish force, designed for the War in Ireland. Recently I've started playing in large Marlburian games in the wargames club, and as people have oodles of British troops, I decided to redo them as Dutch. For one battalion this was a pretty simple change - the Swiss regiment had the same coats and facings, so all I had to do was to repaint the flags! The result is a small but stolid Dutch army, ready to teach the Sun King a lesson in humility - or at least that's the plan!

The Staff

Horse    Five regiments - 11 squadrons (each of 6 figures). I'm sticking to a proportion of about 30% cavalry in my army.

  • Count van Tilly’s Horse                 (2 Squadrons)  Grey coats, red facings
  • Col von Erbach’s Horse                 (2 Squadrons)   Grey coats, green facings
  • Prince von Wurttemburg’s Horse   (2 Squadrons)    Grey coats, black facings
  • Col van Ittersum's Horse              (2 Squadrons)    Grey coats, blue facings
  • Col van Dopf’s Dragoons               (3 Squadrons)   Red coats, white facings

The Foot  Eight battalions, each of 22 figures (including a 4-figure pike stand).

  • Nassau-Ottweiller Saarbruken’s Foot      Grey coats, blue facings
  • Col. van Beaumont's Foot                      Grey coats, black facings
  • Col van Bulow’s Foot                              Grey coats, blue facings
  • Col. van Salisch’s Foot                            Grey coats, red facings
  • Lord van Marquette’s Foot                      Grey coats, yellow facings
  • Col Ferguson's Foot  (Scots)                   Red coats, yellow facings, fusilier caps
  • Col. Lochman’s Foot (Swiss)                   Red coats, yellow facings
  • Col. de Capol’s Foot (Swiss)                    Red coats, blue facings

The Train of Artillery

  • Two Batteries of field guns                     (4 guns, 16 gunners)

I plan to add more units - at least two more battalions of foot and three more squadrons of horse. Phase 2 involves  is to build this army up to a 12 battalion / 16 squadron army. However, most of these reinforcements will be non-Dutch troops - "subsidy" units, possibly with a few British units bolted on.
